    Prospects for Redshifted 21-cm observations of quasar HII regions

    The introduction of low-frequency radio arrays over the coming decade is expected to revolutionize the study of the reionization epoch. Observation of the contrast in redshifted 21cm emission between a large HII region and the surrounding neutral IGM will be the simplest and most easily interpreted signature. We find that an instrument like the planned Mileura Widefield Array Low-Frequency Demonstrator (LFD) will be able to obtain good signal to noise on HII regions around the most luminous quasars, and determine some gross geometric properties, e.g. whether the HII region is spherical or conical. A hypothetical follow-up instrument with 10 times the collecting area of the LFD (MWA-5000) will be capable of mapping the detailed geometry of HII regions, while SKA will be capable of detecting very narrow spectral features as well as the sharpness of the HII region boundary. The MWA-5000 will discover serendipitous HII regions in widefield observations. We estimate the number of HII regions which are expected to be generated by quasars. Assuming a late reionization at z~6 we find that there should be several tens of quasar HII regions larger than 4Mpc at z~6-8 per field of view. Identification of HII regions in forthcoming 21cm surveys can guide a search for bright galaxies in the middle of these regions. Most of the discovered galaxies would be the massive hosts of dormant quasars that left behind fossil HII cavities that persisted long after the quasar emission ended, owing to the long recombination time of intergalactic hydrogen. A snap-shot survey of candidate HII regions selected in redshifted 21cm image cubes may prove to be the most efficient method for finding very high redshift quasars and galaxies.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures.     E2.0 Post-Adoption: Extending the IS Continuance Model Based on the Technology-Organization-Environment Framework

    This paper extends the IS continuance model to improve our understanding of the determinants of E2.0 post-adoption. Our proposed research model incorporates four constructs into the IS continuance model: firm size, firm scope, subjective norms and competitive pressure based on the TOE framework. Results from a survey of customers of a leading E2.0 in China supported our model. We find that organizational and environmental context factors including subjective norms and competitive pressure significantly influence enterprises’ intention to renew their E2.0 service. Perceived usefulness and satisfaction are no longer the strongest predicators of continuance usage in the context of enterprise system

    Revisiting rho 1 Cancri e: A New Mass Determination Of The Transiting super-Earth

    We present a mass determination for the transiting super-Earth rho 1 Cancri e based on nearly 700 precise radial velocity (RV) measurements. This extensive RV data set consists of data collected by the McDonald Observatory planet search and published data from Lick and Keck observatories (Fischer et al. 2008). We obtained 212 RV measurements with the Tull Coude Spectrograph at the Harlan J. Smith 2.7 m Telescope and combined them with a new Doppler reduction of the 131 spectra that we have taken in 2003-2004 with the High-Resolution-Spectrograph (HRS) at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) for the original discovery of rho 1 Cancri e. Using this large data set we obtain a 5-planet Keplerian orbital solution for the system and measure an RV semi-amplitude of K = 6.29 +/- 0.21 m/s for rho 1 Cnc e and determine a mass of 8.37 +/- 0.38 M_Earth. The uncertainty in mass is thus less than 5%. This planet was previously found to transit its parent star (Winn et al. 2011, Demory et al. 2011), which allowed them to estimate its radius. Combined with the latest radius estimate from Gillon et al. (2012), we obtain a mean density of rho = 4.50 +/- 0.20 g/cm^3. The location of rho 1 Cnc e in the mass-radius diagram suggests that the planet contains a significant amount of volitales, possibly a water-rich envelope surrounding a rocky core.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal (the 300+ RV measurements will be published as online tables or can be obtained from the author

    A THEORETICAL APPROACH TO ONLINE REVIEW SYSTEMS: AN INFLUENCE OF REVIEW COMPONENTS MODEL

    Effective online review component design plays a critical role in facilitating online transactions. Although there is abundant evidence that consumer reviews have significant impact on product sales, the design of consumer review systems and its impact on consumers’ beliefs about online reviews and subsequent purchase decisions have not yet been thoroughly examined. Little theoretical knowledge is available about how review components may influence consumers’ beliefs, attitudes and behavior. In this paper, we develop a conceptual model for measuring the impact of review components on the beliefs and behavior of online customers. In developing the theoretical model (called the influence of review components model, or IRCM), we synthesize the theory of reasoned action with theories in social psychology, consumer behavior, and trust to categorize review components and conceptualize the salient beliefs of consumers toward online reviews. We expect that IRCM and its empirical results provide an initial guideline for a rigorous approach to designing online review systems and testing their effectiveness before full deploymen
